How to sign a PDF in Chrome
Checked 20 September 2026
Google says the Chrome PDF viewer lets you "highlight, annotate or draw on a document" and "fill in and sign paperwork". That is true — with one catch that trips people up constantly.
The text tool is a ChromeOS feature. Google's own help pages state: "You can't add text annotations to your PDFs in the Chrome Browser." On Windows and macOS you can draw, but you cannot type onto a form that has no fields.
Step by step
- 1Open the PDF in ChromeDrag the file onto a Chrome window, or right-click it and choose Open with → Google Chrome.
- 2Type into any real form fieldsIf the document has form fields, click into them and type. This works everywhere, including on Windows and macOS.
- 3Open the annotation toolsSelect Annotate in the viewer toolbar to reveal the pen, highlighter and eraser.
- 4Sign with the penChoose the pen, pick a colour and draw your signature. Google notes this feature "is for convenience and doesn't provide signature verification or security".
- 5Save your copyDownload the annotated file from the viewer. On a Chromebook, choose Save; elsewhere use the download button.
What Chrome can't do
- No typing onto flat forms in the Chrome browser — the text tool exists on ChromeOS only.
- No saved signature: you redraw it each time.
- No tick or date fields, no flattening, no Word export.
- Drawing with a mouse produces a signature that looks drawn with a mouse.
Finish it here instead
Type onto the page, tick the boxes, add the date and a signature you can reuse, then save a flattened PDF. It runs in this browser — your file is not uploaded.

Questions
- Why is the text tool missing in Chrome?
- Because it belongs to ChromeOS rather than the browser. Google states directly that you cannot add text annotations to PDFs in the Chrome browser.
- How do I type on a PDF in Chrome on Windows?
- You cannot with the built-in viewer unless the PDF has form fields. Use a browser tool that draws text onto the page — PDFpad does this without uploading the file.
