How to sign a PDF using Microsoft Word

Word does not edit PDFs; it converts them. Microsoft is upfront about what that costs: a PDF opened in Word "might not look exactly the way it looked as a PDF", pages may break in different places, and graphics-heavy pages can arrive as an image you cannot type into.
For a mostly-text document that is fine. For a form — all boxes, rules and tables — it usually is not. Here is the method, and the honest warning.
Step by step
- 1Open the PDF in WordFile → Open, choose the PDF, and accept the prompt telling you Word will convert it to an editable document.
- 2Check the layout before you type anythingScroll the whole document. If boxes have moved, tables have collapsed or a page has arrived as one big picture, stop here — the conversion has failed for this document.
- 3Fill in your answersType into the converted document as you would any Word file.
- 4Add a signature imageSign a sheet of paper, photograph it, remove the background if you can, then Insert → Pictures and place it.
- 5Save back to PDFFile → Save As and choose PDF, so the recipient sees a fixed layout rather than an editable Word file.
What Microsoft Word can't do
- Microsoft states the converted document "might not have a perfect page-to-page correspondence with the original".
- Scanned forms convert to images — you cannot type into them at all.
- The original form's layout is rebuilt by guesswork, so official forms often come out wrong.
- Word is a paid product; the built-in browser tools are not.
