How to sign a PDF in Google Drive

Drive is where the file already is, so it is the obvious place to try. The reality is narrower than people expect: Google documents freehand PDF annotation as a feature of the Drive app on Android, and eSignature as a Workspace feature for sending documents out to be signed.
Opening the PDF with Google Docs converts it, which rearranges a form rather than filling it in.
Step by step
